Thanks for the input guys. Having never delt with a subu/4wd car, I just wanted to make sure it wasnt just something stupid that I was missing. Apparently the only thing missing was super-human strength. The car even drove around with the nuts barely on! As far as my ultimate method, I wouldn't try it unless absolutly necessary as I could see it busting the steering rack.
