Do I?
Do I?
hey whats up peeps... im up in Alpharetta, GA getting my car worked on @ TopSpeed. i dropped the car off this morning for them to figure out what was wrong with it and they said that they did a pressure test that turned out alright, but when they did a leakdown test on cylinder 1 it came up 46% or something like that (i dont know what that means...)
..they said my two options are to either get a new shortblock which will end up costing $4xxx or building the block which they say will cost twice that.. they think that one of the piston rings is messed up or something.
I just wanted to know before i go any further with ordering a new shortblock and all the parts that all this adds up.. goes this all sound right to everyone? 4k is a big chunk o' change.
PLEASE ONLY EXPERIENCED RESPONSES.

Come back home, spend $1200 at mastro for a new short block and have someone put it in. Your going to spend 2800, plus labor (lubricate your ass here) TS gets $110.hr last I knew. 600 has been made on the stock block. There are plenty of ppl here who can swap it out. Then you can go back and get tuned. Your going to spend 6g there for 2g here. And gain nothing but a built short block you diddent need.
I actually just got done reading a write up on pulling and installing a shortblock. It seems pretty easy if you have a weekend open. Id save the labor money and install it yourself. But you can buy a stock shortblock at mastro for $1900 (not sure on the price).
im just a cheapass and cant justify paying 4000 for something i can do or have done for less than 2000.

I'd just buy pistons, rods, new bearings and some headstuds...then have a machine shop do the work...you will use your same crank and block...it will cost the same or marginally more than a new shortblock but you will have a stronger motor...
BEFORE doing any of this...ask them where the leak was? you can check the crank case (rings), coolant jacket (headgasket) and/or valves (torched valved or valve seat)...
