BEFORE doing any of this...ask them where the leak was? you can check the crank case (rings), coolant jacket (headgasket) and/or valves (torched valved or valve seat)...
thats the thing man, they "think" the middle ring on piston #1 is bad... how can they know that without actually opening the motor? and how can they ask me to buy a new shortblock if they arent 100% sure that its needed?

im leaving right now to grab my car, thanks guys.

you can get a stethoscope (spelling?) and listen for where the air is leaking out...they should know how to do it...also be sure they are diong all this testing on a warm/at operating temp motor with throttlebody open while crank...also having injectors unplugged.
If you want, you have my number, you can give me a ring.

hahah seems pretty easy. Everything is easy in theory

hey chris, when you get back and read this, I have a friend who builds racing engines in town... full shop, good guy and will do it fairly cheaply. Call me at (941) 809-7633. Drive safe... I'm sorry to hear that's what it was! And... >.< you drove all the way to GA to do a compression test!?!?!?
