whining depending on when it is happening could be syncros...or could be a particular gear...or if doing all the time while under load be it on or off throttle could be either the front or rear diff...

Meh, I wouldn't worry. In my '05, 1st gear was kinda loud especially at higher RPMS. But 2nd gear was very loud throughout the gear(similar to a supercharger). I wouldn't worry about it, as long as it's shifting fine and not making any grinding noises you should be good.

Edit: do the '06+ have 5 or 6 speeds?

I'm doing some video searches of 2nd gear pulls...aside from the outside noise, you can hear 2nd gear 'winding up'

YouTube - Stage 2 Saabaru 30-60 2nd Gear Pull

You could hear it REALLY good here, he'll even let you know when he goes into 2nd gear :

YouTube - Frank 50 with EWG WRX 2nd gear

Keep in mind, the Cobra guy may not know that 2nd gear in a WRX is noisy like that. I could see where he would compare the sound to a supercharger.

Yeah, M. Your car was running out of boost fluid.

I highly doubt thats a stock tranny as it sounds exactly like my wagon (EWG and SC gearset).

While that is probably true, I just used that video to reference what 2nd gear sounds like in a WRX. Stock or not, it sounds at least similar(maybe not as INTENSE). I vividly remember the distinction in sound that 2nd gear had versus all of the other gears...I grew quite fond of the sound actually

Its probably just a combination of auto-x stresses and the diffs. Cassie's STi whines pretty good under hard braking in 2nd gear, at least from the outside.

I don't know what mine does, actually. I know I have quite a few bushing squeaks (if anybody remembers Paul with the black STi, it sounds just like his car did) but I don't even hear the radio if I leave it turned up while running the course.
