Better as in stronger? Ive heard more cases for straight cut being stronger than the other way around. PPGs straights are supposedly stronger than their helicals. Ive heard claims of 5-20% stronger. But others claim that helicals have more contact area between gears, so any stress that they come under is dispersed over more teeth on the gear, making them stronger. Id say unless you are building a monster of an engine to go in front of that gearbox, youll be ok with either. You just have to decide whether or not you can live with the whine of straights.
The way I hear it, do a straight cut 1 and 2 and a helical 3 and 4. Keep a stock 5th (if you have a 5 speed) for highway.
And if you really need a straight cut gear, you're launching/shifting it wrong

Modena Engineering makes a hybrid bolt in gearset with a stronger but helical 5th (or 6th for STI). This si a great way to go to avoid noise when cruising
Staright is much stronger. Surface area is not the problem, angle is. Put torque stright on is better than at an angle. Straight cut holds more power and takes more abuse period. Depending on what you are doing though, an STI 6spd is perfectly fine for mosts goals.

it really depends on how much power your tranny will feel. Id do 1-4 straight cut with new syncro's and i say this only because.....
lets SAY you go 1-2 and you get your tranny back and your all happy! YAY i got ppg gears..... you put your tranny back in and take it for a spin....then BOOM you blow 3rd..... OUCH....
see where im going with this!!!!???

consider price, PPG's are 4k plus installation, new clutch, flywheel, rear diff. unless you just love the 5 speed, i would consider purchasing a used sti. i found an 06 sti in tampa and the cost of the upgrade is going to be equal or less than the PPg's would have, excluding a small bump in insurance. just something to think about before you jump. although it looks like you can get 1k for a used tranny, id rather upgrade to an sti for 5k than get a new tranny for 4k.
i don't feel like explaining why i don't want an sti... ask any racer any real racer, whether its 1/4 of a mile or an inch winnings winning... anywho... my car is decent how it is... an the motor is going to be replaced anyway with something better... so why spend 33k for an sti when i spent 23k for a new wrx
