Sorry to hear that. Man, I wish our gears weren't made of glass.

You may or may not know that the Subaru STi RA gearset really might *not* be your saving grace. PPG, STi 6-speed, perhaps yes, but the RA gears won't prevent something like this from happening again.

Good luck!

why waste money on that?5mt is way better to have less shifting longer gears... if you go 6mt youll need driveshaft axles and some more stuff better off just putting straight cut gears in the 5spd i think its cheaper that way too

A STi 6MT swap can be done for FAR less than what a PPG 1-4 set costs now. It also offers advantages over the 5MT such as a front LSD and the possibility of working DCCD. If an owner is not concerned with sacrificing a few tenths in the 1/4 he/she can have a wonderfully performing car for quite cheap, at least for a Subaru. Oh and if that owner were to get his/her hands on an 07 unit they would have the best of both worlds....

To the OP....whatever you do, dont buy RA gears. Theyre a marginal upgrade over 04+ gears at best. Unless you change your driving habits, you will break them too.

the 6 speed is not a good mod. yes, it is a strong tranny and will take a beating but the gears are just way to short. i was looking to do a 5 speed swap when i had the STi. best thing to do is keep the 5 speed and just build it right the first time. prob will be cheaper than putting a stock STi tranny in with all the other parts that are needed also.

For the torque band of the STi, a 5-speed is best. For the torque band of a WRX, a 6-speed is best.

My suggestion? If you go with RA gears, leave in your stock 5th gear for highway usage. I think Paul can attest to it, but with the RA 5th you turn almost 4000rpm at 80mph.
