Default OK, WTF is up with this?

Ok, first off I was driving the WRX today (mods: gutted uppipe, turbo-back)...I was getting on the highway and while I was in 3rd gear at around 5-5.5Krpm the car like hit a wall, so I burpped the gas and it was just fine.

Then about 20 minutes later I was getting off of the highway, romped on it, and again the same thing.

Later I took the car to a friends shop up hear in Bloomington and he said that the car threw a overboosting code. He said that I was likely getting boost creep due to having a very free-flowing exhaust and the tiny TD04 wastegate...

So the reason I am posting is to see if anyone has ever heard of this happening with so little mods, and whether it would be better to port a stock TD04 or if it would be more logical to put a VF39 on the car(with supporting mods)?

From the symptoms you describe it sounds like the ol/cl delay problem the 04/05s have (this is an 05 rex correct?). But that overboosting code kinda throws me off. Ive heard of boost creep on the STi, but never on the regular WRXs.

You hit fuel cut. You need a tune. Yep.

its called fuel cut, you over boost and the engine cuts fuel and retards timing.

i had the same problem before i had my ecutek retuned. anytime i hit around 16.5-17 psi it would feel like the engine just choked out. then once scott tuned my car i can hit 18-20 psi peak with no problems...thanks again scott.

I'm a little confused...if it's overboosting due to the TD04 wastegate not being large enough to expel the necessary exhaust gasses to effectively limit the boost pressure, how would a simple tune fix the problem? Sure a tune will move/remove the fuel cut, but the car will still be overboosting.

In my eyes the only real way to fix the problem is to either port the wastegate on the TD04 of get a larger turbo.
