If it was a CEL fix for the rear O2 sensor, it was a failed attempt.... Took out the oxygen sensor today and found there is a hole burned through the top -- switch sensor with my dad's '05 WRX for our long trip tonight and tomorrow.
I'd take a look at the EGT sensor. The passenger of the vehicle a wire with some type of heat sheilding running to the uppipe below the turbo. If I recall correctly the sensor plugs in below that little plastic cover on the passenger side. You won't be able to easily see the sensor but you should be able to feel around for it from the top when you trace the cable. I removed mine and replace with a bolt and resistor.

Evan, you have to remember that Gene wasnt the first owner of that car, so it might have been from the previous owner. Either way its not cool.

The forced induction Subaru's that don't have an uppipe (2.5L STi, Forester XT, not sure about the LGT) don't have the EGT sensor.

The other good guess is rear O2 sensor "fix", which is common for anyone with an aftermarket exhaust.
The Forester XT does come with a EGT sensor on the catted up-pipe.

Dude, if you bought that car from a dealer I would think you should have some recourse.

If I had to make a guess I'd say the wire runs the signal for an O2 sensor. O2 sensor wires are usually shielded wires (the unsheathed wire you see in the pic is wrapped around a sheathed wire) to prevent signal distortion. The yellow/black wire connected to the shield wire (bare wire) is most likely a ground (pretty common color scheme for ground) and it's being used to ground the shield wire. If this is the case, it's really not that uncommon to see a setup like this though not exactly kosher in some cases. The previous owner was probably trying to run an A/F sensor or nullify an O2 sensor. Is it pretty? Hell no. Is an electrical fire going to break out now? Nope. Still though, might want to tidy it up a bit as a loose shield like that could cause signal issues.

I'm going to take a closer took at it on tuesday...Might anyone know where I can print out a pinout for a 2004 STi?

Also, anyone know what the white connector is (right of wire mess)? It's covered with electrical tape...

There is a factory manual download floating around on the web. When I picked up my '05 I downloaded the '04 manual from a guy on this site. Maybe he'll offer to let you download it as well. If not, just google for it.

As for the white connector, no clue. Perhaps it's some type of electrical tape storage zone?

I posted the link to the wire diagram you're looking for already.
