wrx clock
I don't recommend doing it at your clock. The clock is sealed to the dash with sticky double-sided tape (and clips I believe) and you'd be breaking that seal, but that's your call.
A lot of people, including me, have done it at the dome lamp and mounted the detector up near the mirror.

The clock pulls right out. There is no double-sided tape and no seal to speak of.
On the other hand I would agree that the better location for the up high. The dome light power source isn't ignition controlled so that would be a hassle as one would need to turn off the radar detector manually. I hardwired mine into the auto-dimming compass mirror wiring harness which is ignition controlled as a hardwire source should be.
I would highly suggest using the auto-dimming mirror wiring harness.

This should give you some tips:

This guy is bit overboard with the new grounding point as the harness already has a ground wire you can easily tap and avoid the while wire brush procedure. That aside it's a good step-by-step guide.
Yes, the harness is there regardless if you have the auto-dimming mirror option.

The laser shifters/jammers are very effective on most vehicles installed and used correctly. The setup will set you back $250-$500 bucks. I've had the Escort unit on my wishlist for a while now. The BMW M5 forums also do a groupbuy occasionaly on another well proven unit.
