722ish - The RA gearset isn't bad. I could help you get one as well, if you're interested.

The Chalak sets are pretty nice. I like the MPH on the set below :

(ratios for the synchromesh set w/3.90 diffs)
1st gear 3.18 ratio = 41.79 mph
2nd gear 1.94 ratio = 68.51 mph
3rd gear 1.35 ratio = 98.45 mph
4th gear 0.966 ratio = 137.58 mph
5th gear 0.74 ratio = 179.60 mph (remains stock)

Ryan runs a Chalak dog set. Sounds sick on the road, but dogs are too much like high maintenance girlfriends for my taste.

I know Larry Ganz sells a gear set like that for the GC cars. i want to get one for my RS... but it costs a FORTUNE. its made by Chalek. Im sure you know who larry is... if you dont, hes the proprietor of ImprezaRS.com

btw, do you guys know if the Gear case on the WRX tranny is similar/same as the case on the MY01/GC8?
i don't know aboujt the gear CASE being the same, but you can bolt up a wrx tranny to an rs engine...if that makes you feel any better.

The JDM 6 speed will definitely NOT be your cheapest option. You have to buy the entire gearbox, not just the gear set and they are pricey, even used. You'll need a miriad of other new parts as well. Some companies were originally charging around $9k for a full driveline conversion. Some people have managed to do the swap without all of the recommended hardware (half shafts, primary drive shaft, etc), but the gearbox itself will run you more than most of the hardened five speeds on the market. My latest research and discussions with people who've actually driven the 6 speed seem to indicate that, while it's a great tranny, it's not the holy grail. You'd be better off with a hardened five speed with closer ratios.

Billy's Kaaz set and the Chalak gears you mentioned earlier are both cheaper than the going rate for STi 6-speeds. Something to consider.

true... i forgot how much the STi trannys were giong for... so thats why i wasnt sure about the option.

tahts one reason why i asked about the case of teh tranny and also am wondering how sturdy it is. cuz the make dog box sets for FD's and FC's from australia... made by a company that makes the gear sets for their V8 super cars. but, while the gears are virtually bullettproof... the trannies themselves are not. and they had mentioned that while the gears can hold massive amounts of power, the case will not hesitate to puke the main and secondary shafts out the side.

so, i was just curoius as to which case would be better to use, to avoid any potential problems w/ case durability. Id hate to have a nice new gearset only to have it ejected thru the side of the case cuz its not sturdy enough.

What kind of power are you shooting for? If you're looking for 500+whp, none of the above options are even worth discussing. If you're looking to stay below that line, there are quite a few options that should suit your needs. None will be especially cheap. My daily driver will be getting a nice RA Frankenstein setup, but I plan to stay close to 300whp for the duration. I would not want any factory trans if I were headed to 450bhp land and above. For that, you'll need something like the Kaaz(at the minimum) or the MRT 'unbreakable' dogbox ($5k+ please ).

Case flex is a serious issue with the Scoobs and as Billy said above, engine/tranny mounts help alleviate the problem/keep things aligned, but big torque applications will still cause case flex. They only tranny I have not ever heard of a breakage in is MRT's. Their sales pitch on the dogbox is backed up by numbers, but you pay for that strength...big times.

how much are these options gonna run me? i just dont want to spend too much although with the way my gearbox feels like it kinda binds up a little bit now when warm, im sure under 300whp load she wont last too long.... so,

The chalak sets sound nice, but as far as STi RA vs.. Chalak Hardened Synchro set? which one takes the durability bit? id like the toughest for the best price! i would imagine there is nothing wrong with overbuilding a trans... so if you have prices accessible, let me know? after all this stuff gets done, the gearset is prob. the next after that...

thanks
mark
