The oil rings are below the compression rings, so if that was the case then the compression rings would have to be bad.
to much heat in the piston will make the oil ring stick to the piston and not float freely which will allow for the smoke and there to still be compression across the engine.
also, like someone else stated..... check to see if your pcv system is working well
