More helpful hints for timing:

Remove the valve cover and make sure the cam lobes are facing away from each other.

Line the marks on the distributor up with each other, and insert into the timing cover.

Look down the timing cover with the valve cover removed, and make sure the marks on the distributor are STILL lined up.

I have noticed that you typically have to slighly offset the marks from each other so that when the teeth from the distributor engage the teeth from the timing chain idler pulley, The marks will line up.
