You set tdc on the crank by the tdc mark on your crank pulley. It is the white mark counter clockwise from the three little marks close together. It lines up with a plastic ridge on your timing cover. When it is done so, be sure the cams are straight up as in your second photo.
Backfiring sounds like your timing is off.
