need help with aem cam gears

You set tdc on the crank by the tdc mark on your crank pulley. It is the white mark counter clockwise from the three little marks close together. It lines up with a plastic ridge on your timing cover. When it is done so, be sure the cams are straight up as in your second photo.
Backfiring sounds like your timing is off.

Your timing is off and your spark plug wires might be on the wrong cylinders

backfire means timing is off, make sure the belt is tight b4 u start it and mark the belt at tdc if u have to. other than that u just need to b patient bc adj gears are a pain in the ass to set. take ur time with it, n make sure that when it is started, check the ignition timing with a light (especially if u change the cam timing).
