You'd probably get a better response on honda-tech.com

The gears are fine. The second photo shows them straight up. Don't be confused by the up marks not being 90 degrees to the earth. They lean a bit to the left when viewed from the gear side.
At that position, your crank pulley should be also lined up at TDC. If not, that could be why it isn't starting.

I would go with the second photo and the crank at TDC. Also, do you have the plug wires in the right sequence?

Crack?
You set tdc on the crank by the tdc mark on your crank pulley. It is the white mark counter clockwise from the three little marks close together. It lines up with a plastic ridge on your timing cover. When it is done so, be sure the cams are straight up as in your second photo.
Backfiring sounds like your timing is off.
