Do a T5 swap and RTFO. 300 ft. lbs. of torque is great for going sideways, as is the posi in that 8.8 rear. It just needs more steering angle which can be achieved with some parts from Flaming River.
My 89 GT was taken from me before its time and is probably only 1 of 2 cars I really miss. Yours is really rare due to the fact that it has the t-tops, I'd keep it and try to get into the whole drifting thing with it.
You've got so many parts available suspension wise (and everything wise) on that Fox, just have a look around the net. There are a plethora of people on this board who will help you choose suspension and a worthy shop.

coil overs front and rear with afore mentioned t-5 trans, some motor work(mild) and a nice set of wheels. You are there for drifting... dont trade this car for a 240... You should be different in the scene and build the stang. Qa1 makes some good universal coil overs and you can get some bolt on parts for the 5.slow and be out there sliding your ass of in no time at all...

For once in my life (and I cant believe Im even saying this) but I'd like to get a car that's already been started. I'll never be able to get a 5 speed swap done. I don't know anyone who would even touch it
