1st Timer Here
I'm looking at getting into bikes, it's always been in the back of my mind. Plus the fact that my dad rides them just adds to it. I currently have my '97 Eclipse GSX up on Craigslist and was offered an '03 R6. I always get offers for bikes, but I've always been kind of intimidated by them for some reason. I don't know what to look for when purchasing them and I wouldn't call myself a "confident rider". The first time riding my buddies GSX-R 600 I did fine, but didn't spend alot of time on it.
I guess I'm just looking for your opinions on the R6. I'm not looking to go out racing with it, just would like to have it as another daily driver. I know I don't wanna have a bike be my only source of transport. I own two other vehicles, so I'm set at that.
If it matters I'm 22, 5' 10 and 165lbs. Do you think it's too big of a bike for me?

Naw, it'll join my Explorer & Neon.
I've been talking to my other friends who got into messing with bikes about 2months ago. They're encouraging me about it and everything. I guess it'll just be a quick learning kinda thing. How much is a R6 worth usually?

I plan on taking everything I can afford to take really. Plus my dad will push me into that kinda stuff. If I remember correctly the state offers classes and stuff, but I'm not sure (still new to South Carolina).
The only other thing you should check is how much your ins. would be for your bike and yourself. See in FL if you own the bike out right you dont have to have ins. But in SC you do. For someone in your age group you might be paying as much as a car payment per month.
The Rules
Under South Carolina DMV guidelines, anyone who drives a motorcycle must have a Class M motorcycle license or motorcycle instruction permit.
If you are 15 years old and have held another class beginner permit for 180 days, you are eligible for a motorcycle beginner's permit by taking the vision test and motorcycle knowledge test. If you have a conditional driver's license, you can get a motorcycle conditional license by taking the vision test, the motorcycle knowledge test and the motorcycle skills test.
If you are 15 years old and have never had a license or beginner's permit, you must have your motorcycle beginner's permit for at least 180 days before you can apply for a motorcycle license.
If you are Under 18 Years of Age:
* You must bring your parent or legal guardian with you to sign your application.
* You must bring your birth certificate, social security card, proof of residency and insurance information.
* You must submit documentation certifying that you have:
o Completed a driver's education course
o Had satisfactory school attendance
o Practiced driving with your licensed parent or guardian for 40 hours, including 10 hours of driving practice at night.
* You must pass the vision and road skills tests.
If you are 18 Years of Age or Older:
* You must bring your birth certificate, social security card, proof of residency and insurance information.
* You must pass the vision and road skills test.
Prepare for the Written Exam
The South Carolina DMV requires that all applicants must pass a written motorcycle knowledge test on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques.
If you fail the exam, some states require you to wait until at least until the next day to take the test again and charge a re-examination fee.
All motorcyclists are encouraged to study for this written test so you don't take a chance on standing in line at the DMV Office only to go home empty-handed. Online practice tests are available that provide real sample questions from the South Carolina DMV Motorcycle Exam. Take the motorcycle sample test now and test your driving knowledge.
Paperwork
Before you head to the South Carolina DMV Office, make sure you have the following required documents to get your motorcycle license. Examples include:
* Certified or original Birth certificate issued in any state
* Drivers license or instruction permit issued in another state
* U.S. passport
* U.S. military ID card (active duty, retired, reserve)
* South Carolina ID card
* Social Security Number, if issued,
* Documents from a court of record
* Marriage certificate
* Parental Consent Form if under 18
On the Road
Once your licensing requirements have been met, a Class M endorsement will be added to your driver's license. Remember... the safe operation of a motorcycle requires practiced skill, knowledge, and a respectful understanding of the limitations imposed by the operator, the machine, and the environment.

Thanks for all that info Drewster! I just foundout the bike has 18xxx miles on it... How much is a '03 yzf r6 worth with that many miles? He says:
runs strong havnt had any issues mechanically yet. But
the bads are when I was at work someone tried to steal it while the
handle bars were locked, must of found out the couldn't get anywhere so
theres a little dent in the gas tank and some scratches on the sides and
that's about it , just your basic wear and tear on the fairings from
riding
