Save and get the real glass.
Or save and read and learn how to shoot before spending 500+ dollars for the real deal.

I had the real fisheye, nikon 10.5mm F/2.8 and even that was just a novelty that got old in about a week

If you are trying to take night shots with the D40 you are probably better off just using a tripod because It has terrible ISO noise.

Also if you can't even figure out the shutter speed on your camera you have a lot bigger things to worry about other than flash and fisheye lenses

First step read this:
Nikon D40 User's Guide

+1

There is much to learn and while a point n shoot might not seem like it could be of any use I think if you started with that and learned composition it would help alot.

Since you now have the dslr I would suggest, as any photography will and has told you, learn the basics. Composition, Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, etc. You need to gain an understanding of light and how to use it to your advantage. Next to creativity these things are the heartbeat of photography. You threw down the money on a dslr set up, now you need to put it to use. There is no point in sticking it on Auto mode and having a bulky $500 point n shoot.
