Question Photographing Cars Drifting

Drifting being such a fast action sport. I was wondering how would one go about photographing such action. What lens? What mode? ISO? Shutter Speed? etc.

Its impossible to make blanket statements about photography, i.e. for x situation use y settings.

Lens: depends on how far from the action you are. Close - wider is better, Far - longer is better
Mode: if you're any good, manual just like everything else. If not, then shutter priority is probably the way to go.
ISO/SS/Aperture: all varies on what you're lighting conditions are, where your subjects are, and how fast they're moving.

Thanks for the reply. Gives me an idea of what to use. I figured it would be between manual or shutter priority. I will see which one works well for me. As for the lens, I was asking which because some prefer one over the other and vice versa. Some people have lenses they use just for something in particular at times. I'm working with the kit lens that came with the camera 18-55. Not sure yet how close or far I will be from the cars themselves.

If your shooting at the JDM Ups one at CFRC, they will prob have a fence line. So you will prob have to shoot thru that. If they don't then it will be a distance.

I am shooting out there with my 70-300 and also my 10-20. (if that gives you any ideas)

Also for a tip. Shoot in the mode that controls the shutter speed. If you don't have a IS/VR lens i wouldn't recommend going below 80.

If you have any questions Ill be out there early.

That is the event I'm actually getting ready for. Since I've never been to CFRC nor any drifting event I wasn't sure how the course would be. If I needed to buy another lens I was going to see what I can fit in my current budget if the 18-55 VR kit lens I have wouldn't suffice. Just looking at Nikon Len's prices the only one within my budget would probably be the 55-200. As the 70-300 is way out of my budget right now unless I go aftermarket and go with the Sigma one which is in my budget. All I know is I have till Friday to figure everything out. If there was a place locally I could rent the 70-300 for the Nikon that would be cool.

I usually rent a 70-200 IS L 2.8 for events, but no $$ right now. Just gonna use my Sigma.

I asked for a track layout but got nowhere.

Ahhhhh! Yeah I was thinking the other day of asking if there was going to be any designated areas for photographers but never got around to asking.

I found a place in Orlando that rents Nikon lenses so if you think I should have a 70-300 for the JDMUps event I will rent it since its cheaper then buying a new one at this time.

Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR its $36 for 1 week rental plus if wanted an $8 Damage Waiver.

They do also have Nikon AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G and its $63 for 1 week rental plus if wanted an $8 Damage Waiver.

Thats all you. But if you know nothing of the lenses then that could hurt you.

I'm a noob still haha, learning day by day. I can go out there with the 18-55, which I was going to do anyways, just don't want to be disappointed if I end up being a distance from where the drifting is taking place and the 18-55 wouldn't be enough for the "close" shooting.
