IMO, an actual working wedding photographer is definitely a professional. If you're shooting 4 weddings a month, you've got your hands full without a doubt. There is money to be made in weddings, but I stay as far away from it as possible.

There are so many definitions and interpretations of the term professional, guy out of work strums his guitar in the subway every day earns money form it, or the guy with the high powered lens shooting clebs for tabs, professionals ???

I like this definition of professional from Wikipedia
Excellent manual/practical and literary skills in relation to profession.
I will say this much though in a digital age the term has lost much of it meaning...

Umm then something is wrong with that. You should never sell your rights to your pictures. You sell the usage rights...the "borrow" them

This thread will go on like Canon vs. Nikon and never come to a conclusion. If you're shooting 3-4 weddings a month, you need an assistant and I'm available to second shoot as are a few others on here That is a pro IMO

I don't think anyone ever becomes a pro. You're constantly learning and the business is in constant motion. Are you a full time photographer? Sure...I think that's a better "definition" of the title.

Damn. All I was saying was that I've heard someone say in the past, that if/once you get paid for doing SOME TYPE of job, you could consider yourself "professional."

I think too, like Lisa touched on, there are probably difference to be made from "pro/professional/profession"!!!

That's basically what I said?

And yes I agree, 4 weddings a month is rough work and you're most definitely making decent money or something is wrong.

this gets my vote! in sports, pros are an elite few that are known through out the world (david beckham, michael jordan, vincent lecavalier, etc.). so does anyone consider themself to be part of that 1%?

Disagree.

Tom Brady is a pro. Wes Welker is not?

LeBron James is a pro, but J.J. Hickson is not?

What if I don't have a job and I do only two or three photography jobs in a year. Which equals 100% of my income. Does that makes me a professional?
