You don't need to have a DSLR to take good pictures. You should practice with a P&S and learn the art. No sense in having horrible pictures along with a credit card payment.

Practicing is what I'm doing. All day today I've been taking pictures outside/inside just messing with settings. One day soon I will go purchase a DSLR, but until then I will just use my P&S.

Everyone's been giving good information thus far minus the picture bashing in the beginning. If you want to read up on equipment, trust Ken Rockwell.

^He writes great reviews on cameras/lenses and has some great beginner tutorials involving photoshop/lighting/shooting. That would be my first stop.

Michael was write, btw, stay clear of retailers - HUGE rip off.
