No you can, see the D40 doesn't have contact pins in the battery compartment to trigger the shutter when you press the button, so on the battery grip when you press the button it send the signal like a wireless remote would to take the photo, so basically the battery grip acts as a mounted wireless shutter remote. The downside to this is you can't focus and recompose, you press it, it focuses on the first thing it is on and takes the photo immediately. It does make the camera alot easier to hold on to and more comfortable IMO but the shutter button doesn't act like the one on the camera, there is no half pressing. It is worth $40 but i wouldn't pay anything over that.
