I know a few that went to tampa tech for high school. they liked the program.....

Hcc has a class that I and a few more on this forum attended a few years ago. It was good to get some of the basics. Basically to get you into a shop as a helper. from there you learn most of your training in the real world.

Ptec has a program but focuses more on the custom side of things...which is fine but not where all the money is. I would go after the collision side and then learn the custom on your own if that is what interests you.

I am lucky to make a living in the custom field but I could make alot more doing more collision work.

Hope I helped.

Josh

Thats not true at all. I attend PTEC along with some other members of TR and they and myself will tell you, we do NOT focus on the 'custom side of things'. We're trained for insurance repairs because that IS where the moneys at, we're just also taught how to do some other things, along with practice airbrushing, custom painting, etc. I'm not sure who told you your information about our school though..we do collision repair/welding/frame straightening/painting/estimates etc, then get down to more detailed work.

I got into this industry because i have always liked hands on, and fixing things, plus my dad was a bodyman for many years and had his own shop back in the day, so naturally both me and my brother are now in the auto body industry, now dont let these schools blow smoke up your ass because there really good at it, the bottom line is $$

Good luck your gonna need it, if you want to do collision repair for insurance companys, just get a tube of Ky ready for your asshole its makes getting screwed and working for free much easier. Also get out your check book, or your moms and dads if your lucky and buy all the tools you can think of, when you get in a shop look at what the other guys have, buy it, and buy better esp if your gonna be a body tech. And get used to being taken advantage of, and shit on cause thats whats gonna happen for a while, also try and go to all the I-car classes you can and get certified. I-CAR Collision Repair Training | worldwide

This is a harsh industry, and i can think of atleast 30 people that went to school for this that didnt make it. It will chew you up and spit you out with out even blinking.

OH AND READ MY THREAD to see how shops/and insurance companys really work.

just trying to give some advice on a school. While in school I went to the stupid little contests two years in a row and beat out all ptec students both times....but what do I know.

didnt say anything bad about the school I actually liked the facilities more. But just me looking in with an elcamino there with a trans am front clip and 59 caddy tails....plus about everything in the joint custom painted or pinstriped....first impressions are that they focus on custom work.....

The elcamino or 'palameno' as he calls it, is Steve's (the head teachers) personal project, and doesn't get touched much. But with the other stuff, those are things custom painted when theres no other projects in the shop waiting to be worked on, so they layout some flames or airbrush some stuff up. but its not what we focus on. and for the nice facilities, thankyou and your correct. we have one of the best paint booths in florida, along with a lot of top of the line products and tools, which im lucky to get to use daily.
