McLane “Mac” Tilton 1937-2018

Buellton, CA — McLane “Mac” Tilton, former crew chief for the Brock Racing Enterprises’ Datsun 510 team that won the 1971 and 1972 Trans Am championships,

Following his success with BRE, Tilton and his wife, Adelle, founded Tilton Engineering in El Segundo, Calif., and earned a reputation for developing some of the most innovative products of the time. They relocated in 1979 to a larger facility in Buellton, Calif., where the company remains today.




Tilton’s products, designed primarily for racing use, are found worldwide in nearly every form of racing. Its driveline components win numerous championships each year, including 22 NASCAR Cup championships between 1990 and 2015.


Of the numerous innovations Tilton brought to the racing world, the most heralded is the carbon/carbon racing clutch — awarded a United States Patent and the 1988 Louis Schwitzer Award for the technology behind this race industry changing innovation.


The first carbon/carbon clutch to be used in F1, it won its first race at the 1987 Detroit Grand Prix in Aryton Senna’s Lotus-Honda. Today, the technology developed by Tilton is found in nearly every carbon/carbon racing clutch.


Peter Brock paid tribute to Tilton on the BRE Datsun Facebook page:

“Anyone who has been around serious automotive competition in the last 50 years knows the name Tilton Engineering. When you needed the best, you called Mac. Whether it was advice or hardware, he had the answers. The loss is deeply personal to me, not only because of his longstanding friendship but also because we here at BRE could never have accomplished what we did without his amazing talent. His years at BRE (prior to his forming Tilton Engineering) were just a small segment of his inventive timeline. Mac’s contributions are evident in every realm of the sport from club racing to Formula One. Mac was one of those special, practical innovators who changed the world of racing because he had the ability to visualize a solution when it was needed and then could create it almost overnight so it was ready to test the next morning.”


“Quality and perfection were Tilton characteristics derived from his little-known expertise as a gunsmith. He was a virtuoso on a lathe or Bridgeport long before automatic electrical measurement became accepted. Mac was the kind of guy who would put in whatever hours it took to create the solution from scratch and raw metal. I remember going home one night wondering how we might solve a difficult problem only to come in the next morning to find Mac had the finished part ready to go. His genius will forever be remembered as his talent still surrounds us every day in well-finished mechanical reminders of how good production components should look and function. Horst Kwech, former Trans Am U2.5L star, dies at 82

Horst Kwech, an especially versatile driver/engineer active in the 1960s and ’70s, probably best known for his pair of Under 2.5 Liter Trans Am championships driving an Alfa Romeo, has died at age 82.

Proud of his Australian heritage (moved there at a young age from his Austria birthplace), Kwech emigrated to the U.S. in 1961 at age 24. A mechanic’s job at Knauz Continental Motors in Lake Forest, Ill., soon led to racing opportunities, first driving a tube frame sports racer of his own design, later in an Alfa Romeo Giulia with which he won the ’65 SCCA Central Division B Sedan championship.

The next year, Knauz Motors acquired a factory-prepared Alfa Romeo GTA with which Kwech and teammate Gaston Andrey claimed the Trans-Am Under 2.5 Liter manufacturers championship and Kwech used to win the SCCA Runoffs BS race at Riverside.

Over the next decade, Kwech would become one of America’s most celebrated GT drivers, forming (with Ron Neal and Bill Knauz) and racing for the Alfa Romeo performance parts company Ausca; testing and racing for Carroll Shelby (and winning the ’68 Riverside Trans-Am in a Shelby-prepared Mustang); winning the ’70 U2.5L Trans-Am Championship (driving Herb Wetanson’s Alfa GTA); racing a Lola T-300 in the ’72 L&M Continental Formula 5000 Championship; and, in ’74, co-founding DeKon Engineering with Lee Dykstra (which built the highly regarded Chevy Monza, successful in both IMSA Camel GT and Australian Supercar racing over the next several years).



In its detailed biography, Wikipedia notes that Kwech holds the distinction of being the only driver to win a Trans-Am race in both the Over and Under 2 liter divisions; and that he was granted 17 patents over the years as a design engineer.

Horst Kwech was a cheating SOB with an illegal gas tank who shoved Datsun driver John Morton off the track, snatched the trophy and left
before officials disqualified him for an oversized gas tank.

In the final race for the championship, Horst Kwech driving an Alfa Romero, was in 2nd place behind John Morton
on the last lap, going into the corkscrew at laguna Seca. Kwech booted the Datsun in the butt and knocked him off
course to take the win.


During the inspection following the race, officials found the Alfa Romero had an illegal, oversize gas tank
and that was why the Alfa had skipped a pit stop.......without making a pit stop, those cars were nose to tail......
and that speaks well for John Morton's driving ability.
Horst Kewch had already escaped from the track with the trophy. John Morton won the championship anyway.

50 years later during a demonstration run at a vintage car race at the same track, using the totally restored original cars, the
Alfa was in the lead this time.


John Morton drove into the back of the Alfa Romeo in the same last turn, with his foot on the gas,
and put the Alfa into the weeds.

At first I felt a little bad about such a historic, fully restored Datsun 510 being crash damaged.
Then I realized that the Nissan/Datsun company had plenty of Japanese craftsmen who probably
were standing in line to work on such a famous car.


And If I were John Morton, and knowing there was an army of Japanese craftsmen fully capable
of making the car like new again, I would have pushed that Alfa into the weeds with my foot on the floor,
just like John Morton did.


My 510 Datsun was not painted like this, but I won 5 Florida State Autocross Championships.
