Default S13 mystery noise.

Ka24de knocking sound? - YouTube

Tried pulling the plugs, so it's more than likely not rod knock. in about 20 minutes im pulling the valve cover and removing the chain guide, cuz that's obviously rattling. Will update if i find anything else out while i'm in there.

pulled the valve cover, but haven't pulled the guide on the right hand side just yet. It sounds like possibly a bad valve or something?

If that's a valve, it's awfully loud. I would almost lean towards knock, but it's more of a rattle sound. How did the chain guides look? If you made it that far.

PS: how long until this bronco throws you off again?

Ooph, that is a scary sound. Could be the guides like Krucked says, they make some weird sounds when they go, but i'd consider taking a look around your valve train. Valves and bad springs make ugly sounds too, especially since the KA24DE has nothing but buckets on top of the spring/valve and retainer assembly.

geez. that made my skin crawl.

get yourself a long screw driver or spend the 5 bucks and get one of these.... Mechanic's Stethoscope
EDIT - 3 bucks

and try to figure out where that noise is coming from.
We can sit here and guess what it could be, but using one of those, you'll be able to tell if it is coming from the head, or the top of the block or the bottom and what cylinder it could be.

without knowing any of that,
my first thought was spun bearing/rod knock
then i was thinking maybe something dumb like a wrist pin.
I don't know that it sounds like valves, but it was interesting how the rattle got worse as the rpm's fell.

You could always get some thick oil or even some lucus, pop the valve cover off and pour it all over the cams/valves. quickly get the cover back on and start it back up. If the noise is coming from the valves, typically, pouring oil/lucus all over will at the very least, change the sound for a few moments.

Thanks for the input guys. Here's what i've come up with: Chain guides (well. the right upper) are in decent shape along with the tension. I'll get an absolute oil pressure reading today. It's not rod know (at least 98% sure) cuz it's rpm and load dependent between 2000-3000. Used a screwdriver and it really didn't narrow anything down but it's absolutely louder up top. I don't think it's valve slap either, never seen rpm dependent tap. Sounds almost identical to what a lot of people are goin through with pre-detonation. Jay, I really hope it's more than 3 days.

Today's plan of attack is going to get my gauges finished, seafoam the fuck out of the motor (guy said it sat for about a year) so i'm leaning on detonation due to shit built up inside the cylinders and valves.

please tell me you aren't using gas that is that old.

does backing the timing off help?

running premium gas?

seafoam is going to lower the octane rating a fair amount. so if it is pre detonation, that might not be such a great idea.
I've had healthy engines diesel themselves all over the place after a heavy seafoam treatment.
just because it sat doesn't mean there is carbon build up. if anything, your compression would be low because the cylinder walls and rings rusted.
Take the spark plugs out and look down the tubes, you should be able to see if it is really nasty in there. if it is, pour a bunch of seafoam or carb cleaner or whatever down there, break it all up, and crank the engine over (with the plugs still out, and after letting it sit for a little bit) let it push all the excess out (might make a mess, be prepared) then put it back together and start it.
another thing, pull the fuel rail off and check the spray pattern. an injector that is dripping, or barely spraying, or even just constantly spraying just a little bit, will cause detonation issues. a bad injector is a possibility with an old engine. it could still ohm test within spec because the injector guts are good, but there could still be corrosion problems.

OP - I think you were on to something when you mentioned checking the oil pressure. The noise that we're hearing sounds almost "plastic". If you havent already I'd check down inside the front cover. Not the top one either, but the lower one. Or, just look down inside. It may be obvious what is wrong.

I say this because the impressions I get when the sound starts is that it your guides are worn and your tensioner is not doing its job fully, allowing the chain to drag over what is left of the guides.

If the engine has sat for a long period of time and you didnt flush out the old oil and add new, much like Empire mentioned with the gas, its not helping matters any. The galley that feeds the oil to the tensioner and even the cams is crazy small. Its easily clogged with sludge from old oil causing all kinds of "stuff" to go wrong.

Checking these things wont cost a lot of $ either, only your time. Just be prepare beacause what you find may end up costing you $$ to fix. But think of it as an investment in reliability.

The noise is coming from the front via stethoscope. on a better note the motor just blew the front main and poured oil all over my driveway. this guy can come get his piece of shit out of my car.

Sounds like that engine was having all kinds of problems.

Lesson learned?
