Default LSD Driving Impression...

I'd like to pick your brains a bit. Here is my request:

Since my car is a base model with an open diff and I'd like to change to a LSD, I'm curious what your driving impression are for the different types out there.

Key information on my end is that my car, motor wise, is stock and although i do plan on doing some sort of power adder eventually I cant say when. That being said...I wonder how a j30 diff "feels" compared to a 180sx diff vs regular LSD vs a stock open, etc...

I dont need to specs because I can search for those, I'm more interest in your experience with the LSD. If you've owned more than one type even better. I hope you don't mind sharing. If the thread goes no where, oh well, I'll get the point that I should search somewhere else.

Thanks for your input in advance!!

all depends on what sort of driving you do.
HLSD or VLSD would be reccomended if your road racing or Auto-x/Time attack
the CA 180sx Vlsd is 4.36 and feels great paired with a KA powered vehicle (but not bad on an SR car)

since I mostly over-steer I'm bias to a locking differential. a KAAZ 2-way/ATS/OS Giken/Tomei or budget welded.
R32 GTR differntial is a clutch type, heard pretty good things, want to try it out first hand.

Different strokes for different folks. all depends on what driving you do

Understandable, i should have included that for the start. I'll discribe my driving style like TireRack does..."spirited driving". I'll do the occasional drift here and there and enjoy the feeling of traction you get when your car "sits" in a corner as you carve though. I'd also like to get away from that dud of a feeling as you leave the line with a one wheel smoke show...sad stuff.

I do spirited driving. My Room-mate and I go on curvy roads and try different lines and what not.
Ive found a Vlsd to be very practical if that's what kind of driving your after.
I can do that sort of driving with whatever diff I'm running. My alignment may have to be changed slightly, but you get the picture.

Also, a J30 diff is a 3.90 on a stock KA it wont be well paired.
search for a 4.36, that probably would be best.

HLSD are awesome for street cars. Invisible until you need it. VLSD's are nice too, just wear out and dont seem to have the seemless engagement the HSLDs do. Plus you can't wear out an HSLD so thats sweet.

Up in the mountains the S15 HLSD I had last year was awesome. Just kept my foot on the gas and let the diff sort the power for me.

You can drive mine on the auto-x course if you want. I think you'll be surprised at how different our cars are.

when you state HLSD do you mean Helical LSD...like a Kaaz. The cut gears cause the lock instead of fluid or clutches. Awesome feed back guys. I do appreciate it. Too bad the Kaaz type are so $$$.

Yeah S15 helical. KAAZ are clutch types.

The only aftermarket Helical/Torsen I know of is a Quaife ATB.

Kaaz is clutch type. HLSD is helical, and came in the S15s. You get them off eBay, or other places.
