You don't have to pull the 6 bolts out to get to the shifter. You have to pull out that plastic ring and the snap ring and the shifter pulls straight out ( with a little bit of tugging ). I found it easier to put it in neutral because it's a slight pain to get it back in once it's in gear. hope this helps.

 

He said his short shifter was already on a plate, so yes he does have to take the 6 bolts out. Fuck, read.
