WTF! what is this head too?
I picked this head up from chromedrifter and he said it was a s14 head, but thers no cam journal in the back! these head are identical except that missing cam journal. it wasn't snapped off either on both sides if some one states that because its compleatly flush and has casting marks where the other one is. what motor is this head too?

it hink its from a 95-97? some one on zlivia stated this
One thing to note on the S13 or '95-96 cams in the later S14 heads without the last cam towers:
You can use any cam in there, but you HAVE to push in the rear oil plug.
Measure the depth on the stock cams with a toothpick (or something).
Then use a small socket as a 'drift', and just tap the oil plug in as far as it is in the stock '98 cams.
Easy stuff.
what do they mean you ahve to push in the rear oil plug? and how do I do it in the camshaft..

I know theres 2 different s14 heads so its probably the later model one. Just google it and see some pics comparing the 2. I used to have it on my favorites but i just looked and its not on there anymore.
It's definitely a 98 head. 98-04 Frontier/Xterra KA's are probably the same way.
The cam plug thing: See that oil hole on the cam in the last pic? That's to lubricate the journal that isn't there on the 98 head. There is a seal in the back of the cam. It's like a stopper in a bottle. You need to push it into the cam farther to block off that last oil hole. If you don't, oil will come flying out of there unrestricted, possibly causing low oil pressure.

ok, thanks epstein. So I will have to tap in the "stopper" in the back of the cam therefore driving it past the oil galley, and "clog" the hole? Thank god I can use the head. I was freaking out for a minute when I found out. I was like WTF, wheres the las journals, did they break off? no they couldn't have broken off. I felt stupid when I found out it was a late model s14 head. explains why It looked so f-ing clean. Im trying the journal cap swap and its going pretty well. some of the caps were allowing the cam to move so I switched them to other ares and they work well. like 2 caps allow NO play at all and put a little "drag" on the camshaft but Ive never tried to rotate the stock head I had without the seats in to see how easy it rotated or how much lay there was. some caps have, and I mean literally a hair of play, like you couldn't fit a hair barley between the 2. is that allright? in conjunction with the other caps that have 0 play at all and are tight, but not too tight help with the other ones that have a hair of play? any one ever taken the buckets out on a stock head and see if the journal caps allow cam play even the slightest. I would think its normal for them over 17 years of cam rotation to have a hair of play on some caps on a head with original journals. thanks epstein you help me alot on this stuff.
