The top is cut off, and then they port the inside. Once that is done the top is re-welded back on. This is assuming that you are talking about the vg30et from the z31, not the vg30det from the z32.

oh yea...i haven't heard about that for years now! but yea, you just basically cut it open, port it out and weld it back, my buddy did it on his old z31 turbo. Apparently with a good set up it can yeild like 7-12%hp gains!
