maybe the car is reading knock from lifter tick. i dont know how sensitive your knock sensors are, but on my car it would read knock (like 12 degrees being pulled) and go really slow, i found it was lifter tick causing it, changed the oil and it went away, no timing getting pulled. it came and went just like your problem.

I also thought it may be the knock sensor. I replaced it with a used one and moved it off the block just to see if it helped and it didnt.
I priced a new knock sensor and was quoted $179.00

There is some lifter tick, but really nothing that bad. Car has less then 1000 miles on oil change. The one thing I did not do when hooking up my SAFC II was set the knock sensor feature. I did it last night, maybe that had something to do with it running well all day today.
I guess I'll see if that helped.

put it on a logger and take it for some runs when its acting up and see whats goin on.. that will tell you whats goin on. knock pulling timing w/e i dont know if there are many loggers for s13 ive never had one. gl finding it..
any nissan dealer has a consult. or try finding a very rare techtom mdm (will be expensive).
hooking up knock sensor on s-afc wont change it, just shows you the readout. if u calibrate it good you can see if your knock sensor is functioning or pulling timing during driving. mine would only make knock at idle, just from picking up alot of vibration from the not so graceful KA, only other time i got knock was when i accidentally filled up with 87 octane and forgot, and i got on it one day and got a bit of detonation.
i think u have to have the car warmed up and let the car idle, then set the knock...it will always be reading something like 140 or whatever but when u set it, it sets 140 = 0 so that anything more will be considered above normal or whatever. good luck on that.
i might be heading to st pete tomorrow to sell parts, maybe i can come look at it or something. if not, id say you'll have to fork over some cash for a dyno run to check things out. while you're at it just throw down for a rom tune at xat or something, martin should be able to figure it out maybe. maybe your s-afc is just not perfectly set, so its doing odd things during certain conditions.
