depends on what you have in your car.

if you are swapping it out soon anyways, do what ever is easiest. If you have a wiring harness for ka24e, do that. If it was a dual cam, put that in. I dont see any short term pros/cons, when do you plan on doing your swap?

The KA24DE is leaps and bounds ahead of the KA24E , in terms of reliability, efficiency and potential.

Proof??? E's are plenty reliable. The only real difference between the KA24E & DE is head & intake mani design. Blocks are the same. Potential? Noone knows the E's potential yet because noone really gives it the time of day... maybe it's the 80's valve cover? Oh well.. all the better for me... I get them FREE!!! But if you dig around the net, you will find KA24E's making 700+.... Find me a DE making that....

im with rasta on this one. DE's have more parts easily avail, but ive seen some badass E's too. Ive blown 2 DE headgaskets with easy dialy driving, about 120k each. I have 2 ka-e's still running in their 170k/210k milage with no rebuild, and they get the shit beat out of them.

Get what is cheapest, and easier for you to swap.

I have a '90 coupe with a KAE harness..rasta wanna hook a bro up? lol, j/k. Where can I find reasonable KA's on the net? I am building a drift car. Going to be picking up a redtop after the 1st of the year and building it for my coupe. Going to be send the head off and tossing some Tomei 256 cams in it and probably a T28. Hoping to put down 400whp or in that ballpark. Just looking for something to have fun with till its done. Hoping to have it finished by Feb 1st. *Sunny

PM me. I do a lot of SR installs, so KA's come and go... Why do you want to go SR? I've owned both and can tell you that KA-T is the way to go for drifting... period. My last SR car made 397WHP & 380ish @ 18psi w/ GT25R. The car was fast up top, but sloppy down low(useable boost coming in ~ 3.8-4k)... which is where you want the power to be in drifting. I'm currently running a 140k KA24E with a custom bottom mount manifold and SR T25. Other than that, EVERYTHING is OEM. (injectors,ECU,MAFS...) RISKY!!!... I know but E's are expendable at the moment. I've been pounding the piss out of it for 3 months now with 0 problems. The car is a blast to drive! It almost feels supercharged down low... practically INSTANT boost. My future plans include GT2540R(small but FREE), 50 pounders, Tial 38mm, porting, cam, HG & studs. I will be testing the strength of the OEM bottom end...(which I estimate will hold down 350WHP). Later, It's balls to the wall with a full build and plenty of positive pressure..

I want to go SR mainly to bring the car to its japanese roots and since I cant own a JDM one I would like to get it as close to spec as possible. Pretty much I am looking for a engine to toss into my coupe since its empty right now and I miss driving it. I have the money for a cheap turbo setup until my SR engine is done early to late Feb hopefully. Hows a CA18DET? Is it as capable of 300whp as the SR and cost effective? What will I need to bolt it up to a '90 Coupe? *Sunny

I've never personally worked with a CA before, so don't quote me BUT... I've heard that they can easily handle 300WHP with a turbo/injector/MAF/ECU upgrade. As for the swap, I think it's pretty much the same as an SR. You would need: motor, transmission, harness, igniter, Ecu, and MAFS. Unfortunatly, I've also heard that it's pretty hard to find a clean one...

I have been reading up on them today and found the same thing your saything about finding a decent one. I figured it would be about the same as a SR to swap in. I found a fella that is selling them for ~$1k shipped and supposedly he has forum cred so I tossed him a PM. Anyone have a ballpark figure on one?
