Like everyone said, rust is usual for an older Z, how well does it really run, how many miles are on the motor, and the rear suspension isn't the best but can be changed. They have no LSD. Yes the 280zx weighs a hell of a lot less than a 300zx. BTW is this a slicktop or T-top??

I would make that the last thing you do. After so much power both wheels are going to spin anyways. Add some power. Ic, dp, exhaust, boost controller, etc etc. You will also have to decide what you want to do with fuel. 280zx ecu's are nontunable. You can go with z31 and upgraded injectors, (a friend of mine programs and tunes z31 stuff so he could help out for cheaper than Jim Wolf), or go with a standalone system. The ticking noise you are likely hearing is a lifter. A lot of 280's seems to do it.

No need to rebuild .. The only thing the l28et lacks is stronger pistons. Go forged and nothing will break. Get a metal headgasket, arp head studs and the hg wont blow. That's about the only weakside of the motor. Stock rods are forged as well as the crank. You don't need to rebuild to throw a cam in and change turbo unless compression is off. To each his own...
if your going to replace the pistons the motor has to come all the way apart so you might as well clean everything out and make the motor more efficient and have lots more power....oh well i guess it all depends on who you ask

I love my 280zx turbo. T-tops, interior is nearly perfect, the ride is nice, has cruise control, 5 speed. I get lots of looks, and plenty of comments.
The only bad part has been in the rain...ooh that is different from FWD.
As for being light, I believe it's 2800lbs. Is that light to you? Seems a bit heavy for a 2-seater, but lighter than the 300zx's for sure, they're pigs.
And I get 24 mpg the way I drive. And it FEELS fast. And as long as I feel like I'm going fast, I get the sensation of speed, and that's enough for me. Some days 50 is enough, some days I wonder why the speedometer stops at 85.
