er uummm no, deffintaly not the tranny, seeing as your noise is coming from the engine it is your rod's as in the things the piston is cnnected to the crank, Your bearings broke or are worns down so bad that there is to much play when the piston goes up and down. www.howstuffworks.com You dont want to rebuild an engine you can buy so cheap used. Just go do some hunting for one.

is it comming from the bottom? i've seen some of the higher mileage 240's rockers breaking and tapping on the valve cover...see if its tapping from the head (top part of your motor) or the block (the lower portion) or you could just replace it....KA's are everywhere...why not just get one thats not posessed by a fuckin monkey.

swap eh, sound like fun
ive been looking for a motor, and only been able to track down 1 at xat. i need this done soon, and i was wondering is a swap hard to do by myself, im looking into it. but, what kind of tools do i need or r there any precautions should i take. im new to this so, treat me like a noob that i am. 4 now ill be hunting.

replace the motor.
and rubber burner. youre probably thinking about the sohc cause the dohc doesnt have rockers. its a cam over valve type system, a pucket head.

the only complicated part is squeezing the motor between the mounts. thats a pain in the ass.
