Default New motor interest...

so me and several other Nissan guru's have been talkign and the topic of the followign engine swap came up...

KA20DE

what you say?? not a typo. it's soem engien that Nissan sold in some JDM RWD Van. i want to get one and disect it..just to check it out...

like a SR it is 86.0 x 86.0 bore and stroke. square motors are great for boost. the relatively short stroke makes for a great bottom end for high RPM durability. KA valvetrain!! man to be able to rev to 9000+ rpm without the worries of the SR valvetrain (i know from experience how weak the SR valvetrain is).

the block probably has ALOT more spacing between the cylinders than the KA24 or SR20 removing one of it's weak spots. indestructable Iron block...SR's only dream of this.

the only thing i wonder about is the crank. the KA24DE has a crank that isnt as well balanced as most performance cranks...now if this KA20 has a better crank. it might really be THE best motor to build for SERIOUS power (700+ Hp @ 9500 RPM) and reliability.

so what does everyone think? I know i'd need the following:

Pistons
Rods
Turbo manifold
Intake manifold (for high RPM flow)
and custom metal HG.

the way i see it this motor could be the perfect harmony between SR and KA....hrmm.

any ideas?

scott here are a few of the problems that we will probably run into with this motor

1: headgasket will have to be custom.
block will need to be oringed, and then a copper headgasket will need to be run. with the orignging it will no longer weep coolant.

2: why not just machine the block to accept an sr crank? its damn close...

Ya I got a better one CA18DET w/ a CA20DE crank ... Bam .. indestructo 2.0 block.. indestructo head / valve train.... IRON BLOCK with thick walls and a main girdle so manstyle it has KA's scared. Has 8 runner intake which kicks ass. Metal gaskets.. plenty.. manifolds etc...

Ok, the motor came in two japanese work-horses, the Atlas and the Caravan. The Atlas is not the same full sized truck that Nissan is putting out next year, but a flatbed truck much like the little overhead cabin Mitsubishi-fuso trucks that deliver fridges.
Heres a pic. . .

http://www.nissan.co.jp/ATLAS10/F23/0105/main_top.html

The other is an 8 passanger minibus that used a similiar chassis as the Atlas.

http://www.auto-web.co.jp/HOT-NEWS/2...0_CARAVAN.html

Now, I'm not sure how well this was translated, but this is what an owner said about his Caravan KA20DE. . .

"It is the engine, KA20DE, but the engine of this series the NISSAN general-purpose engine is ill-smelling."

Im not sure if that is to say "it stinks/sucks etc." or that it has an emission problem, but either way its not too good sounding.

Both these trucks where imported to Austrailia, Europe and Russia, and this is what an Aussy review had to say about the motor.

"Gasoline-engine models offer a choice of two 4-cylinder engines--the 2.4-liter KA24DE engine and the 2.0-liter KA20DE engine. Both engines feature a twin-cam design and electronic control to produce a flat torque characteristic in all speed ranges. Because they generate high torque in the low-speed range in particular, they provide improved driveability even at low vehicle speeds."

Yep, sounds like my 240. high torque, LOW speeds.

and heres the specs:

<KA20DE Petrol Engine> L4DOHC Displacement: 1998cc
Max.Power: 125PS/5600rpm Max.Torque: 17.8kg.m/3200rpm
BorexStroke: 86.0x86.0

The only aftermarket parts I could find was an air filter for both trucks from Mine's of all people. . . .
But finding parts for it i think will be impossible. Allthough the Japanese are totaly crazy when it comes to minivans, I dont think they like making these kinds of vehicles fast, and these two chassis are the only two in Japan that have thse motors.
It would be interesting to wonder if any Japanese have modified thier KA24DE in thier trucks using American aftermarket parts. . . . .

As far as im concerned, I'll stick to dreaming about getting the proper motor in my car, the SR20, cause its depressing enough to know i have a truck motor in my car, let alone a motor from this!

Martin, what would the bore x stroke of this motor be?

Didn't matt talk to you about Destorking the KA24 to a KA22E? I Like that idea much better, but maybe its because I like the way it sounds.
