well it probably would cost more to recall it then to just let people bring it in on their own accord, as is like most greedy companies. im not exactly sure what changed mechanically between the 1st and 2nd gens to cause more 2nd gens to have the problem. and yes a very very little number of people get crankwalk in 1st gens, i was told the other evening someone on tbdsm board had walked 2 1st gens, i dont remember who he was tho

well the main reason 1g's dont walk as much from what i understand is the location of the crank angle sensor and the fact that maybe mitsubishi had a bad run of bearings and/or cranks....seems to me that they should have recalled it and lost the money just so they can keep a good name...but alot of people are pissed...i even heard that some mitsu dealers dont even know what crankwalk is...they blame it on the driver if its modified and blame another reason for it messing up not being the crank....at least brandon mitsubishi knows what it is....i talked to a cool tech and he knew his shit...pretty nice guy...if my engine ever walks im going with a 6 bolt 1g motor and building it mildly for street use.....sucks for so many people...theres a guy on a dsm board who paid sean glazar from extreme motorsports(famous dsm guy) 7500 to build him a motor and it walked it 700 miles....then he takes it back and sean wont pay for the damages because he didnt go with the clutch he recommend to the customer(clutch masters....weird that he is sponsered by them huh...) even tho alot of people say that the clutch is not the reason...so that guy had to shell out another 2 grand and was happy with it becuz supposebly sean was helping him out...bullshit...well im just rambling off at the mouth

Nobody really knows what causes the crankwalk specifically, allot of ideas though.

For some reason the thrust bearings on some of the 4G63's wear excessively, regardless of which pressure plate you are using.

They just keep wearing and hammering the thrust bearing surface until eventually the engine starts stalling, making weird noises, crank takes out the crank angle sensor, clutch pedal sticking to floor after being depressed.

It's not an issue with the thrust bearings as many people have rolled in new bearings only to have it happen again. Others have rebuilt their same short block only have the thrust bearing fail again.

The best cure is to get rid of the problem all together, the short block.

I got crankwalk twice on my 95 AWD talon. Luckily I had an extended warranty. The first dealership replaced teh bearings, but then a year later it got it again so luckily the next dealer gave me a new shortblock. I had to explain to both dealers what crankwalk was. It took the second dealer 3 months to get the motor installed right. I had to keep trying to explain them where things go. I got a year more warranty on the block.

Depends all what you have to do... If you catch it in the early stages and can just replace the bearings it isnt too bad but if it doesnt get caught you could end up needing a whole new shortblock. I think the dealer charge on mine was around 4k or so.... But I had a warranty. If I didnt have a warranty I would have just put in a 6 bolt and not had to worry anymore.

Default pedal to the floor

Hey i heard one of you guys mention the clutch pedal sticking to the floor. I have a 97' GST and just recently my pedal started sticking to the floor. But i have fixed my problem or so i think, by adding brake fluid the clutch resevoir. I dont really understand crankwalk or what the symptoms of it are when driving so should i be worried about it, even though my pedal doesnt stick anymore?

if u take a left turn and u push your clutch in during the turn and it sticks to the floor, just go home and park it because you probably have crankwalk.

as for the fluid being low, that doesnt have anything to do with crankwalk as far as i know.

also re-read the WHOLE thread. i think www.dsm.org was mentioned atleast once as a reference of the explanation of crankwalk.
