How do you think skilled mechanics make their money???? By beating the book time you!

The book time tells you how long the job should take. If a skilled mechanic can do it under book time well thats how a skilled mechanic makes good money.

Lets set up a sceneiro. Lets say the "book" says it pays an hour to R and R a throttle body and clean it. Well we all know it really only takes about 10 minutes to do that. So lets say the shops hourly rate is at 75.00 dollars and hour. Thats about 1.25 per minute (1.25 x 60 if you cant understand that) If we know you know it can be done in 10 minutes you say the shop should only charge 12.50 (1.25 x 10) So tell me how is a mechanic supose to make a profit off that. It cost more than 12.50 to run the lights and air compressor in the shop for that 10 minutes!!!!

Now that sceneiro migh have been over kill but I am tryin to relay a point to you. A good, fast mechanic who knows his shit and get the job done right is supose to make a little bit more money than you new comer who is still kinda slow at what he does. And thats how they make money...by beating the book time!

Eveyone wants their car worked on for free. Yes alot of mechanics do this because they love cars...yet they have bills to pay just like everyone else!

Sorry for the rant and hijacking you post....I just cant stand when people make these type of comments. Shops arent here to save you money. They are here to make money and pay the bills also. I dont see Good Will having an auto repair shop so they can work on cars for free.

First and foremost, don't presume to insult or impugn my intelligence; Or, you and I are going to have some issues. I understand everyone needs to make a living. I further understand professionals have every right to set their own prices; Just as consumers have every right to choose another professional for the job. This is elementary business. But, so is this: Using unethical means to that end is not acceptable; no matter what profession it may be. Charging someone for more labor than was actually required is unethical, period. Does it still happen? Yes. Should it? No.
