Yeah, Thats what i was told. He said it has aftermarket internals, but stock cams. Being a chrysler motor, is the 420a free of the infamous mitsubishi engine problems?

What kind of nasty things should I be looking for?

Well for starters the block itself isn't as stronge as a 4g63t. I've heard of people blowing up the 420a even after building it with forge internals. Some go 2 yrs with no problems... some blow up sooner. But I've yet to read of one built and running stronge for years upon years.

I was in the DSM era and I had my share of 420a... I had about 90% of the turbo kit for my old car and sold it all when I realized it was not worth the money being spent.

I'm just being honest with you and some may argue differently but if you want an Eclipse and you want it to be turbocharged then go with the 4g63t based model.

Thanks for the info.

None of you guys have ever had issues with bad bearings/walking cranks? Did the 2nd genss come with 6 bolts or only the 7 bolt engine?

1g's 90-the first half of 92 came with 6 bolts. Last half of 92-94 1g's came with 7 bolts. 2g's 95-99 come with 7 bolts from the factory... some have swapped out their 7 bolt for a 6 bolt.

2g's 4g63t 7 bolts are known for crankwalking... some earlier in the two digit thousand mileage some in the three digit thousand mileage and there's the few here and there that haven't had a problem.

It still seems like a coin toss to me either way.

You either have a weak bottom end, or one that wreaks havoc on its own bearings.

Is the strong block on the 4G63 really that much more advantageous than the non-crank walking 420a? and is the 6 bolt a direct swap for the 7 bolt?

Yes and Yes

For some reason people say the 99 is less prone to walking so I haven't had those problems and everyone knows I beat on my car.

Also if you are in the market for a project car I have a 95gst that already has a 6bolt.

take it for what its worth, but the 6-bolt motor is the best 4 cylinder in the world. its rediculously stong, holds up to pressure, and has excellent oil and air flow.

crankwalk is the result of a few different factors. first, the crankshaft itself is made of soft metal, i forget what metal. as it moves around and heats up and cools down, and then putting pressure on it from the clutch, it wears down and in turn wears the bearings down. also, the oil doeesnt flow very well along those bearings. there are so many writeups out there about the theory of crankwalk, you could easily find them.

I've read alot on crankwalk, and one persons efforts to stop it by modifying his bearings to keep oil flowing through them.

PM me with some more details on the 6 bolt project car Dario.

EDIT: I love how informative everyone in Mitsubishi tech is. If you go to hondatech, all the threads are OMGZ I BROKE SOMETHIN HELPZ!!! or MY CAR WONT START y0!

But noone ever has any real answers.

if u wanna go ahead and do your own research on either the 4g63 or the chyrsler 420a here are some links...

2gnt.com (everything 420a performance, very informative if u end up getting an rs/gs eclipse or eagle talon esi)

dsmtuners.com and dsmtalk.com (probably the best info you can get anywhere for all things 4g63...7 or 6 bolt)
