Lightbulb Bought My 1st Mitsu, Now what?

I recently bought a 91 fwd esi. Completely stock, purrs like a kitten. What can be done to increase hp safely without boring it to a 2.3 stroker? Open for any suggestions. Also does anyone think a Greddy Turbo timer and Greedy Boost Controller would help?

ESi? Is it turbo? If so, it's a TSI if its an Eagle Talon. You don't need a turbo timer, you could either drive normal under boost when you getting close to your destination and turn off the car, or you can get to your destination let the car run for 30sec to 1min then shut it off. Works just like a turbo timer. You can raise the boost to 14-15psi on the stock system, pass that you will be hitting fuel cut till you upgrade your fuel system (fuel pump... I would suggest a Walbro 190 but it depends on your goals). Before buying aftermarket parts I would go over the car and do any key maintenance it will need. Maintenance is the key with these cars. People make the mistake of immediately start modding them. You don't need to go 2.3 stroker or any of that to increase hp. Simple mods can get you some decent goals. Set a horsepower goal first then you can get the help you need to achieve it. Set the goal now if not you'll be wasting money buying parts then having to sell them for others.

Good luck and congrats on the purchase. BTW, you don't need a Greddy boost controller... you can get almost any other well known brand. You need to decide if you want a MBC (Manual Boost Controller) or EBC (Electronic Boost Controller).

More info... you can find it at VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions and Talon, Laser, Eclipse 1G Info DSM

+1 first thing i did with mine was timeing belt, waterpump, any leaking gakets, filters, etc. after that then i started modding cause i new there was nothing major that would break cause i already did the important stuff.

it is a turbo. im new to the whole dsm thing. the car honestly needs no maintenance on the motor. Needs paint and side molding but thats it. O and i know where to get a greddy turbo timer for like 90 bucks:

GReddy Full Auto Turbo Timers [Part#: 15500020]

You do not need a turbo timer. It is a waste of money. Spend it on something performance wise.

^^ He's right!!!! Only if you plan to let young kids and Tree Shed mechanics work on it

If you get the work done by a proffessional and don't treat it like a 16yr old in his first Vtec Honda you will be fine!!!!!!!!

Learn to work on the car yourself, trust me you'll want to learn. These cars are a major pain, I've owned about 6 so I should know. They are sometimes picky and seem like they have a life of their own. Forget the turbo timer because it won't give you any sort of hp gain. Before buying any parts research on the car, there's so many parts and paths you can take. It's hard sitting here and telling you what to do unless you set a horsepower goal... 300hp... 400hp...?

There's basic bolt-ons that are cheap and will give you more hp, there's also some free mods that will be beneficial. I say you research and set a horsepower goal before buying any parts.
