Default weird howling noise.

alright tonight sucked. my oil filter came off and it sprayed oil everywhere....on all the body panels on my car and everthing in the engine bay. after we got the oil filter put on there again the car drove fine...but after a while...it wouldn't boost at all

and whenever it tries to boost i only hear this howling/whistling sound...it won't go over like 2 psi.

all the intercooler piping seems to be in place too..

what could cause this?

Yeah, sounds like the "death whine". Double check all your ic pipes though, make sure they are tight. Check for any splits or rips if you have the factory piping. Also, double check to make sure your blow off valve is totally secured and tightened down to its flange.

Blow off valves (usually the stock ones), can pop out of their flange and sit loosely, when they are not tightened down securely. What will happen is your boost will rush out of the hole where the flange is, and cause a "howling" sound as well. I was working on my car one time, and I removed my HKS blow off valve. When I put it back on and went to drive, I got a loud howling sound, and the car wouldn't build boost, so I turned it around, back to my house. I popped the hood, and realized the blow off valve popped out of the flange, so I stuck it back in there and made damn sure it was as tight as I could get it. Problem solved. (of course, the plastic I/C piping sucks in the first place, so hard pipes are a good investment, along with a good quality FMIC).

Keep your fingers crossed and pray it's a leak of some sort...otherwise, hope you get a good tax return and replace that compressor.

Could be the turbo is gone. This happened to me when some of the fins broke on the 16g I had 2 yrs ago. It howled real loud only boosted around 1-2psi.

I would do what BoostLogik said. Start looking for any leaks especially around the bov and if all those are secure then the turbo could be the problem.

to clarify..while it was making that weird sound..it made a loud pop noise...and after that it boosted fine without the noise...was it maybe clogged up or something?

i'm just worried that the turbo might blow while driving and then i'll be stuck for another 3 hours on the side of the road.

Everything you describe (sans oil filter coming loose) is identical to my old '90 TSI (although, I don't recall the problem boosting). The pop, the howl, the spontaneous remission.

I don't know what caused it, and I never had the problem again.

another update: I removed the filter and checked the turbo...

it has a lot of shaft play...i can push it in and out for like an inch and then up and down like 1/2 an inch.

i still hear this weird knocking sound...it seems like it's coming somewhere from the back..near the throttle body.
