Default egt gauge

is there any reason a mechanical egt gauge would be pointing to 6, when im at 5500+ rpms and accelerating hard?

usually it would be at like 11-12. last night, it seems to be running ok, just stays low all the time. sometimes it actually seemed to be higher when i was going slower, unless i was just imaging things.

when my car is at idle and even sometimes when im cruising, the egt needle bounces around a lot. i mean REALLY bounces, it would bounce from 6 to 10 repetedly at like a million mph. could that have to do with vibrations in the exhaust?

also, what does an egt gauge actually consist of? the guy who had the car before me put it in, so i never saw it. I know there is the power wires for the light, but is there like a vaccuum wire or anything, or like one big sensor wire?

You have the egt probe wire, 12v power on wire, ground, and the light wires. Go thru all the wires and check for a loose connection, usually when they bounce around like that a loose wire is the cause. Maybe they rigged up a power source real quick and never changed it. Ive done that before when i was in a rush to tune and didnt have an egt back in yet.

thanks bro, im gonna check that out right away. i was thinking it might be a loose connection too.

is there any reason that a..say 85-90% mechanically sound car would have any problems so as to rapidly change the temps like that? or that would have to just be a glitch with the connections or so?

85-90%

for those temps, you would have noticeable signs that somethings not right, thats way too rich.

for timing to be off like that, it would be noticeable during driving unless your retarded and cant tell your timing is off like hell.

well thats really the only thing that would effect an egt guage like that...it could be sensing knock at full throttle and be pulling timing....fuel would not effect egt's that much, thats the only thing that makes sense to me besides a lose wire *edit* or probe could be coated with carbon

no lol its not driving bad. it accelerates fine and drives fine and no horrible noises or anything...except of course that damn lifter tick...

and that whacky egt gauge started just out of the blue one day. before that it was a solid steady needle. the car ran the same then as it does now.

yeah and youd also feel the car pull timing. for it to pull that much, youd know somethings fucked up, not just the egt jumping around.
