Method of engine break-in
Hey guys.
I remember seeing a thread quite some time back either on here or on tbdsm about engine break-in. In that thread was a link to a site that theorized that, against common belief, it is better to run the engine hard during the break-in period rather than run the engine very gently.
The reason I ask is, a new 6 bolt engine just went into the eclipse, and I was curious as to what method of break-in you guys would use.
Thanks.

At least thats how I was taught to do it.

That seems right and seems to be what I've always heard.
ok what i did. i put in straight 30 wieght for the first oil, free revved it, let the engine heat up all the way, let it idle for 15 mintutes or so. then, drain that oil out while its still hot, so any shavings will cling to the oil better. put in more natural oil, you can go to 10w30 or somthing this time. go for about 100 miles on that. do some second gear pulls at half throttle or full throttle what ever you are comfortable with. but dont shift out of second, go to like 5000rpms and then let off the gas and let the car engine brake, do this a few times, then while your driving just make sure to engine brake whenever you get the chance. put in another change of 10w30 after that of regular oil again, not synthetic, and go to about 500 miles, if you dont see any oil smoke from the exhaust by 500 or 600 miles, go ahead and put synthetic in, id say its broken in by then. this is how i did it and theres no oil smoke and the car runs perfect.

The only thing that I'm worried about trying this method, is that there is nobody that I know that has tried this that can testify and stand by this method.
Have you tried this Tom? Do you know anybody that has?
the best you can do is make the oil clean. I changed the oil 6 times in one week with my new motor. keep changing the oil till the oil is clean. drain oil into a clean pan and look at it closely in sunlight. if there is any metallic sheen it needs to be changed again and again till you see none. I dont baby my new engines much. my 2.3 was run hard the first day.if its built right it will stay together.
forget those ring breakin articles. you are far too late for that. if the rings dont seat in the first 30 seconds they never will.
