Default Bye bye 16g :(

well last night I was running my buddies CRX.. well I was beating on him pretty good but still anyways I start hearing this skreaching metal on metal sound so I get home thought ok I'm just gonna leave the car start it up in the morning and hope this horrible sound goes away (I was in denial) so I really didn't know what it was but knew it wasn't good. So anyways I drive to work then get home and it's really really bad now and then the car will not let me see boost at all. So I start ripping everything apart pull the turbo out and guess what! There is so much shaft play in the turbo it touches.. no wait it gouges either side of the housing. So well my turbo is absolutely fucked and I dunno what to do. I don't have enough money to buy another turbo and I really don't wanna go from my big 16g back to a 14b. If I get a new turbo I obviously wanna upgrade more but I just don't have the money. the wheel and housing aren't great anymore but if I can find a resonably priced rebuild kit I am just gonna rebuild it so at least I can see a little boost and drive the car until I can save up for something else. So if anyone has a rebuild kit laying around and will take a resonable amount of money for it please let me know.

Cant help you out with a rebuild kit, but I can tell you how to make your car driveable with the blown turbo. Might as well save for another, you will end up having to do that anyways if you rebuild it yourself.

That sucks to hear Mike. Do you have any signs of why the turbo would just take a shit on you all of a sudden? Are there any kinked oil lines? Maybe you overboosted? Can you take pics of it and send them to me?

From the sound of it, seems like the thrust bearings are gone, which would cause the scraping on the compressor housing.

You dont have to change headers or anything like that, basically its a ghetto non turbo car though. Disconnect the oil feed from the head and block that off, asuming your not running a line from the oil cooler. With the oil supply cut off, you will not have to worry about the seals going out and leaking oil everywhere. You can either hold the wheels inside the housings with something to prevent them from spinning, or wait until it freezes up...but that allows for possible breaking if its at high rpms. It will be a good idea to block the return line as well, just as a precaution if some odd internal failure happens. The coolant lines you dont have to worry about. You will also have to disconnect your maf from the turbo and connect it to the throttle body, you will be slow and non turbo, but halfway driveable if you need your car. Sounds getto and it is, but works.

I would replace your feed line. Friend's car killed two stock turbos in a fairly short amount of time. One came on the car like that, the other did the same thing yours did- horrible metal scraping sound on the way to a meet. Both had horrible shaft play gouging the housings and bad bearings. Replaced the stock head feed with an aftermarket feed from the filter housing and replaced the drain tube and his new 16g is still doing fine 6 months later.
