The evo is like any other car if you do not know what you are doing or try to do things cheap you will lose things like reliability and durability.
jerry has an evo 1 which comes with a 7 bolt 4g63 and it also crank walked so they did have the problem with the early evo also.

I thought evo's 1-3 came with 6bolt 4g63's...

And this is the first I have ever heard of any evo getting crank walk. I have not seen any documented proof and I don't know who Jerry is or anything about his car so as far as I am concerned it holds about much truth.

They are 7 bolts and the reason you dont hear about them is they dont exist here and they dont have a crank trigger like I said.
2g`s dont die because the crank starts walking a bit. They die because once it starts walking it gets picked up by the crank sensor and that shuts the car down. I have seen 1g`s with cranks that didnt just walk they got up and ran. You just dont hear about them because they will run for along time before they do enough damage to kill the motor.

It does seem to be more common in the 7 bolt motor though. And I believe there is more to it than just the 7 bolt crank not beeing nitrate coated like a 6 bolt. But I am sure it helps contribute to it.

I have been dealing with these cars now for several years now even discuss this topic with jerry aka lancerman and we both agree that the design of a 7 bolt block is better just the crank is weak and the evo is made with the same design as well but if you nitrate the crank I think that would solve the problem besides that its an awsome design.
I want to hear more about this nitrate...Is it a coating or a treatment like cryogenics?? Has anyone ever cryo'd a 7bolt crank? How about the 7bolts that come in the NA 2.4's do they have to be treated to be durable? Where can you have this done? and is it expensive? worth it?

good read

http://tampabay.dsm.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=13657

The evos have a couple of small things that help fight the crankwalk issue. They are required to run sythetic oil. Sythetic oil is way better at protecting metal to metal contact. They also have a improved thrust bearing design. The evo8 engine is the same as an evo4 engine. If you do a search on crankwak in evolutionm you will find there are already cases of crankwalk with the 8s. And people in other countries often chime in with comments on how bad the evo4s are known for crankwalk. Why the heck mitsu didn't nitride the cranks in 7 bolt motors is beyond me. We all know what happens when cam manufacters send out bad batches of cams. It happened to crower, it happened to web. Cam batches where sent out that were not nitrided.

Very good thread Jerry. I am very interested to see the outcome of your findings. How great would it be, to have a built 7 bolt, without having to worry about the crankshaft walking off on ya'.
