From your description of the "clickin and clankin", it definently sounds like he has bent some valves, possibly all 16. Doubt there is any damage to the actual pistons or connecting rods. Usually, the valves are the things to go out. Tell him to be prepared to open the wallet up, especially if you are going to have a mechanic do the work for you (unless you guys get a good hook-up.)
