Default DSM's Breaking??

Why does everyone say DSM's are junk and they break alot?? The only thing I've noticed is stuff breaking 10K-15K miles after it should have been replaced. Is there anything that breaks on these cars NOT due to abuse or maintenance?? I really got to thinking about this tonight after a friend ( not being named) said he wanted to sell his 1G cause it has a slight miss. This is after he just put in a new clutch and ordered a bunch of stuff, not to mention the car is already nicely modded and has a new tranny.

Thanks, Frankie

slight miss is probably from plug wires, coil packs, resistor or leaky caps. All fixable in under $100

Let him do it and take advantage of the situation.

You probably got one of the few that were well maintained and not abused. They were a reasonably priced turbo sports car and they got abused while not being maintained properly, or given some of the special treatment a turbo car demands. Build quality was not great to begin with and improper upkeep combined with many cars being worked on by people with no prior mechanical experience causes a lot of problems. It gets to the point where you have a set of problems to fix because of previous neglect, which don't all crop up at once but over time. Everything seems to need to have been replaced 10-15k miles ago, just as soon as you get the car running something else fails. Then there's the problems the previous owners caused. My car's previous owner did a bunch of subpar wiring and I only realized it when something failed and I pulled the wire loom off to see the main engine harness melted together in one lump. Also, most current owners are the same kind of broke kids that caused the problems in the first place, without enough money to pay to have the car fixed, working on it themselves with no previous experience, not even having money to fix things the right way themselves and having to jury-rig stuff and avoid replacing stuff that should be replaced "while you're in there". Unfortunately that describes where I was when I got my car. I now, at least, have a lot of experience fixing pretty much everything in the car, I just wish I had the money to go along with it, heh. My car would be much less of a POS if I could find a decent job.

Maintenance issues will pop up in ANY car that is getting old. These issues will be amplified when you start dumping the clutch at 5000RPM+ and believing it is ok to boost 18PSI+ on the stock fuel system.

Yea I know what you're saying. This kid in Spring Hill bought a 90 TSi AWD with like 130K miles on it and it still had the stock turbo. He thought he would be cool if he ran 22 psi on pump gas, I'm serious.

IMO DSM's are no more unreliable then any other car out there. It's all in how you maintain the car. I think what gives these cars a bad rap is that they are reasonably priced and they are fast and with that combination you get young kids buying them, modding the fuck out of them, running ungodly amounts of boost and then BANG. I know pently of DSM owners who have had their car for years, done your normal every day maintance and never had a single problem.
