you know, the first dsm i worked on was my ex's. it came w/ a few mods and was a really cool car. it was modded and raced and beat on. it wasnt nearly as bad as most people make it out to be. DSM's are just stereotyped now, just like Jewish people being frugal/stingey, polish people being naive/dumb, Hondas being inordinatly slow, etc. its like the guys already said, most of the time, the cars are neglected their whole lives and by the time we get it, we are so eager to raise the boost, drive fast and treat the car roughly. then, when something breaks, we stand back, scratch our heads and wonder why shit keeps breaking... could it be because its a Mitsubishi and the general public assumes that ALL imports are reliable and can go 100k miles before a tune up??? maybe, they assume that all you need to do is add gas, perform oil changes and the car will last forever? probably on both accounts. im positive tahts what happend to the FD's and why mazda lost their ass replacing rotary motors underwarranty.

if the cars are properly maintained on a regular schedule, like Mitsubishi recommended in the FIRST place, alot of the "reliability" issues could have been avoided in the first place.

and this car in question does have a miss and a cold-start problem. it has new plugs and wires. i checked the ISC and all the coils check out fine. the only thing i havent checked is a coil pack, ignitor or ECU. i also havent cleaned the TB. but the TB shouldnt need cleaned since hot-starts are perfect, has solid idle when its warmed up, no surge, no high idle, no nothing. its an intermittent/random problem w/ the misfire and consistant cold-start difficulty. next on my list of things to check is the ECU.

even if you do have a hacked car w/ half-assed work put into it, alot of it can be remedied. its nice to have a virgin unmolested car so that when you do perform mods, you know the quality of the work and that it wasnt halfassed. but a modded car is nice because you usually get the car and mods at a discounted price than if you had to buy all the shit yourself.

very true and i couldn't have said it better myself. Hopefully we'll get this shit figured out tomorrow or friday, i've been doing all the right things on this car and im not taking any chances early that will fuck something up, but as far as all the mantenence that needs to be done has been done, we're down to the last of the problems right now and when we get it figured out i'll be a lot happier about the car, but since i've had it, it's been all work. hopefully it will be worth it in the end. wish me luck

A friend of mine works as a security guard and he was talking to a guy with a FWD turbo Laser who was in his parking lot one night. The guy said he's mostly stock with air filter, free mods, a 2.5" custom exhaust, boost gauge, almost unmodded. He said he had done the boost restrictor mod to get a few more psi. My friend asked him how much boost he was running and he said it had been at 17 psi, but suddenly started running 21 psi a few weeks ago. He said it was ok because his knock led wasn't lighting up. You guys remember the knock led? This guy was on the old Talon digest and found that mod, but apparently didn't find the much later response that the knock led doesn't really do anything. He has to have messed up when hooking up the boost control lines and is basically running as much boost as the turbo will put out. My friend gave him my aim name and I've been hoping he'd message me so I could let him know that he needed to turn the boost down, and give him some general advice, but he hasn't contacted me.

You have other cars? Fairly reliable cars? A DSM as a project car isn't so bad. You can just buy one, pull the engine/tranny/subframe front and rear/rear end/suspension/interior/wiring harness/all door and body panels and then completely rebuild the car from the shell up using new parts wherever you can and aftermarket parts wherever the stock parts sucked anyway. Then you might have a truly reliable DSM .

Or you could get an Evo before idiots have had enough time to really screw them all up. The Evo is hot.
