Have a friend that has a 97 GST and he is looking to start modding it. He has found an APEXI down pipe and full catback APEXI exhaust. From what he and myself understand, there is no cat when you use both of these. Will he get a check engine light because I understand there is an o2 sensor after the cat.

Any info would be appreciated. We don't want to see the dreaded CEL unless you guys no a way around it.

you might get a cel at first, but probably not. i got a code when i messed w/ my exhaust, but it went away and never came back. if you do, have autozone clear the code and it won't come back.

The check engine light is probably on because the 2nd O2 sensor was removed and never reinstalled. I have to do some research, because I am not sure about whether or not you can get rid of the check engine light for the missing "cold" O2 sensor.

Thats what we are worried about. Even if the aftermarket exhaust or downpipe has a bung for the o2 sensor, I think if installed, it will throw a code thus fudging up the way the car runs because the ECU will try to compensate or correct it.

I figured someone else on this board has tried this and encountered this problem.

It wont effect the way the car runs. Its only there for emission control, dont worry about it.

If it does not have a spot for the second o2 sensor, go to any exhaust shot and have them weld in a o2 bung. I didnt have a spot in mine when I had my custom exhaust made. The o2 bung is like $10. Never had a problem.
