Wow, where to begin with this...

First you need to establish your goal for the car. Is it going to be a weekend toy, built for autocross/road racing, Street drags etc. Are you looking for 300,400 or 500+hp

What is the current overall condition of the car as it sits now. Are there any things on it you are looking to change in the immediate future, or are you ready to just save up and play later? Mechanical issues now may cause your budget to go into the red pretty quick with a rotary. You need to know if the motor has ever been overhauled, and who and when it was done. You need to know what parts were changed when it was done as well.

You also need to know what the driving style of the previous owner was like. Did they do 10,000 miles a 1/4 mile at a time, or was this driven daily with some spirited driving once in a while on the highway.

Once you answer these questions it will be easier to give you a recipe of what you need to do to meet your goals.

I second everything The Camel has said. These cars can either be awesome and fun or really put you through hell. Before you considering buying one you should do a good amount of research on the car. Also tell us if the engine has had any rebuilds at all and how long ago was it. If the engine has never been rebuilt and it's on 98K miles then the seals are very, VERY likely to be running low compression and it WILL need a rebuild if that is the case. Also do you know if it is a base or a touring or an R model? Giving us more info would help us put you into the right direction...

Also take into consideration that there aren't many shops around here that do work on rotaries let alone performance... it'll be hard to get stuff done to it.

like other people are saying it all depends on what you want to do with the car, if you want it as a daily best to keep stock, if you want to drift then you want to spend the $$ on setup of suspension and power, circuit racing you want suspension and power also but smoother, show car? well ?

and also depends on your budget.!

Troux is in the process of a LS2 swap in his FD. He helped me with mine when two people were needed. He is quite knowledgeable as well!

for any type of simple reliability, lsx motor is the way to go, ive done 2 lsx into rx7 swaps, and i just put about 6500 miles on my current one in a matter of about 4 weeks without a single issue motor wise. so to sum it up, if you dont have the time and money to dick around, lsx.

Folks, I think we can stop beating the horse. The OP has not answered any of the important questions, and I doubt he will once he sees how much either of the proposals are. I have seen this time and time again. The guy buys a 7, wants Ferrari power on a Geo Metro budget. He posts up on a forum about buying the car. and gets a lot of questions like we have all posed at this point. He reads them, and thinks to himself we are all nuts, and there is no way that he can afford all of this stuff. So he tells his non-rotary buddies about what we have all said. Non-rotary buddy tells him we are all full of crap, and that he knows a friend of a guy that had a 600hp rotary that he only spent $500 to get that way. About 3-5 months from now one of two things will happen. One, there will be a post asking where to find a motor or other major part for the car is. Or two, there will be a for sale post getting rid of the car because he cannot afford the car anymore and they have too many issues. He will then want to trade for a 240, wrx, or Evo. So I will sit here with my popcorn and wait....
