turbo 2 engine swap
how much is involved in swapping a turbo 2 motor into an 88 n/a motor. I know the trans drive shaft and rear end are different, but is it possible to run a turbo 2 motor without changing anything except the drive shaft? also the ecu is obviously different, but i was curious if anyone has acoplished the task. If not i guess ill just have to drop an ls1.

Lol, if you can't handle a TII swap, then an LS1 is also outta the picture.
For real, its not all that difficult as far as engine swaps go.
You'll definitely want to stay w/ the same series motor as your car (ie.. S4 n/a --> S4 turbo, or S5 n/a --> S5 turbo). If not you're asking for a lot of wiring/ compatibility problems.
Get a motor that comes w/ harness and ECU, that way you can just pull the n/a and harness. Drop in the 13bt run the wires, bolt in the ecu and start worrying about the drive train.
You can run an n/a tranny on a 13bt, and a custom drive shaft will get you there, but by the time you buy one (unless you make it yourself) you could probably bought most of the parts to convert it the right way.
That being said, an n/a drive train can handle stock TII power pretty well, but you start modding and ......

how much power can the NA tranny take?
I don't know mazda's ways, however most of the time, the only differences are gear ratios and what not like that....
why is the driveshaft different? I've never seen a turbo2 engine in person, so that might have been a pretty self apparent question once you see one, lol
what are the rear end ratios?
Suggestions on the best combination for acceleration? top speed? overall drive ability?
I'm just starting the processes of learning, so I apologize for the dumb questions.

From what I've seen the N/A tranny can handle about 250. I know a guy local here in Gainesville that is running a 13b-re on a n/a tranny in a FC. But he still has stock twins, stock boost, stock everything. Their is no point in making a custom drive shaft. Most deals online come with the turbo tranny. Just source a rear end with half shafts and your good to go for drive line wise. Oh and also you want to make sure the model your starting with is already a 5 lug. That will make life easier. If not then you got to convert everything from 4 to 5 lug.

Here is some good info on our trannys. And yes to answer your question their is a big difference between s4 n/a driveshaft s4 turbo driveshaft s5 n/a driveshaft s5 turbo driveshaft. Ever single one of those has different lengths. Also then their is the automatics. They are completely different as well.

What's a good price to pay on the wiring harness for the TII?

That all depends on condition. You can "find one" for about $20......but would I trust it....no. For $100 you should be able to find something pretty decent.

Scott with Mazsport I think charges 150-200. For good condition turbo harness. But search rx7club for better deals. Just remember you are getting a harness that is 20 years old in some cases. So their might be some re-soldering needed.
Cool. Thanks alot. A guy on ebay had one for $100 shipped, but alot of the wires were cut, just wanted to make sure I could get a better deal with less of a headache for that kind of money
