Official Boat Day Thread
the boat is a 87 the motor 86. I just rebuilt the motor over the winter and the only thing I really changed was the intake reeds. I went to fiber reeds. The motor is a 2.4. I am turning almost 6200 rpms at wot. My prop is currently a 14.25 X 25 in pitch. The prop is just a regular thru-hub exhaust. I am wanting to put a bobs nosecone on the lower, and go to a 27 or 28 in chopper, and see if I can get up around 80mph. With the nose cone I can get the motor higher out of the water. Right now, it is sitting pretty deep though. I will send you some pics tonight when I get home. Let me know if you know of anyone looking for a boat like mine. I want to sell it so I can go back to school
obrien-
How deep is the lower unit now?
You can raise it to where the top two water inlet holes are out of the water when on plane.
Do you have a water pressure guage in the boat?
Just keep raising until you notice the water pressure drop, then lower back to the previous setting.
I am assuming you already have a jackplate on the boat.
If not, you will need a ton of setback on that Checkmate. 15"-18" or more.
The Bob's nosecone really only helps on boats above 80. It will let you run a higher engine height and a air out the prop though.
A chopper would be a good choice on that boat, it needs to get the bow out of the water.
I have a 26 pitch chopper you could try sometime.
If you want to sell that boat, go register onto the forums at www.screamandfly.com . That is the mecca of outboard high performance.

hey brian this is obrien, I had to change my name, my account stopped working. anyway, It won't do any good to raise my motor without a nosecone, due to the fact that I am already reaching blow out speeds for my stock gear case. 70 mph is about all you can get with the stock lower for my year motor. Thats the main reason I want the nose cone. I have plenty of w/p, so really the only other thing stopping me at this point is going to be the prop. As it is, I can blow out the prop coming up on to plane so badly that I have to stop and plane off again. If I keep the boat it will have a nose cone and a chopper. With the way that boat is running now, I don't think it will need too much more set back with a chopper. The current prop has decent bow lift as long as there is not too much weight in the boat, so a chopper should make a pretty good difference.
What motors do you currently have on your boat. they look like the 220 lasers from the pics. what kind of speeds are getting from your boat.

You're right.
They're bone stock 1987 220 Laser's.
I spin 14.5X30 Mazco OS Cleavers 6600.
This set up gets me high 80's.
I have a set of 15X28 Merc lab cleavers I'd like to trade for a set of 14.5X32's.
The 32's would rob me of the midrange punch, but they would get me into the nineties.
At the moment I am running one CLE with a nosecone and another without. I did have matching CLEs with nosecones, but the starboard motor's nosecone started cracking and leaking, so I had to use a spare I had.
Do you know anyone that fixes stuff like that for a reasonable price?
I know Bob's Machine does.
Anyone else?
One of these days I'll have a set of 2.5 280 Offshores on that boat. They're just so damn pricey.

My Girlfriends dad owns "Dick's Outboat" right off of gandy, hes a great guy, been in business for a LONG time and really knows his shit, if you want some more info, PM me or feel free to hit me up at 727.481.7997
brian one guy you can try is Andrew Ingle of Ingle Marine here in St. Pete. He knows his stuff. He may be able to fix it and if not, he will know who can. If I am not mistaken, he has at least one in the shop. His number is 727-572-8363. he helped me alot with my boat and I know that he works on boats as big as 40 and 46 skaters. Andrew just finished rerigging a 24 skater like yours with new 2.5s. He is expecting to get into the high teens with 32 labs once the motors are broken in. Of course that is with the race ecu on those motors to allow them to turn 8250 rpms. With the stock ecu the boat should be on the rev limiters at 110.
